Good morning everyone! I wish all of you the best in what the day may bring! Prayers and good wishes for everyone going through some tough medical issues or otherwise. Had a great time with Bea McKinney at a special reception for all Silver City Museum volunteers on Monday, February 24 from 2:00 – 4:00 in the afternoon! Lynn and I really enjoyed the reception. Plenty of snacks and great company! Thanks Bart! We were able to converse with Mary Parker of the WILL Program also! Super entertainment! Whoever they were, they were really good!
Bart sent me an email a few days ago introducing me to Kathy Hymer from the Light Art Space Gallery on Broadway Street. The gallery is having two exciting upcoming exhibitions opening in March.
Louis Carlos Bernal: Retrospectivita and the Art of Alvaro Encisco: Ghosts from the Desert Mr. Bernal is an artist living and working out of Tucson, Arizona. One of Bernal’s famous photographs was taken here in the Buffalo Bar! The Light Art Space Gallery has ben open since September of 2018. The opening celebration will be Friday, March 7, from 5-7 p. m. ArtistAlvaro Encisco will be be present to talk on his work starting at 5:30 ;p. Show runs until Saturday March 29. Gallery hours are Thursday 11-4, Friday 11-5, Saturday 11-5 , Sunday 11-3 and by appointments. Call 575-574- 8444.
Our regular LULAC Council 8003 meeting will have to be cancelled until Tuesday, March 18. I will travel to Washington DC for a National Board meeting on that on the regular meeting date. Council elections will be held on that meeting in March for all elected offices and appointments to other positions in the Council. Care to run for an office! Declare you candidacy for President, Vice President, Secretary-treasurer. Perhaps an appointed position as Chaplain, parliamentarian or building manager. Be prepared for a speech or two ! We need some fresh blood in all positions! A huge thanks to those who have stepped up in the past to help the Council continue to flourish!
I have spent several hours doing some plumbing at the Hall. Seems like our drain from the kitchen on our was plugged! This was starting to become a problem several weeks ago. I decided to tackle the project. I believe I got it working again! It cost the Council approximately $30 instead of the couple of hundred dollars from a plumber! I am totally amateur!
Our Hispanic Author selection committee has been named: Mikki Jemin, Renee Provencio and Javi Marrufo. Hopefully the committee can come up with an outstanding Southwest Hispanic Author by sometime in June. I know they are diligently doing research and probably some reading! Thanks Dr. Fox and Ted Pressler and others for your work on the Southwest Word Fiesta!
Renee is setting up a meeting on March 5 to plan the Enchilada Dinner scheduled for sometime in May. You can contact her if you wish to be directly involved in the committee for time and place. Unfortunately, I will be in Phoenix for a doctor’s appointment. We will keep you updated as to developments. I am sure Renee could use any donations of funds, eggs, corn tortillas, chile makers, help delivering, making the enchiladas, etc. The fundraising is for the Bayard Library and LULAC Council 8003. I hope we can count on our Council members to contribute our share of whatever is needed!
Bea, please let our guest know that we move our date up to March 18th for our regular meeting! Thanks!
State Convention venue has changed to Casino in Espanola! Cost and expenses drove it our of Santa Fe. It is scheduled for Augusta 15, 16, and 17. This could all change, but I just wanted to keep up updated. Much more to come on the Update! This is just to give you an idea of what has and will be happening soon!
Next Council meeting 5:30 p. m. on Tuesday, March 18 at the Polo Sierra LULAC Hall! Hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Fred Baca, President
LULAC Council 8003
