After spending about 7 hours at the Hall about two weeks ago on plumbing issues, I am glad to say our drain from the kitchen has been cleared! Cost to Council is approximately $30! Saved us a bunch on a plumber! I am not a certified plumber, but it needed to get done and as inexpensively as we could! We will hear other reports on what else is happening as will as a Treasurer’s report. I will be traveling to Washington DC beginning my journey today, Tuesday. I will attend the National LULAC Board meeting as the State LULAC Director. Should be back Friday evening!

February 28, 2025
Good morning everyone! I wish all of you the best in what the day may bring! Prayers and good wishes for everyone going through some tough medical issues or otherwise. Had a great time with Bea McKinney at a special reception for all Silver City Museum volunteers on Monday, February 24 from 2:00 – 4:00 in the afternoon! Lynn and I really enjoyed the reception. Plenty of snacks and great company! Thanks Bart! We were able to converse with Mary Parker of the WILL Program also! Super entertainment! Whoever they were, they were really good!
Bart sent me an email a few days ago introducing me to Kathy Hymer from the Light Art Space Gallery on Broadway Street. The gallery is having two exciting upcoming exhibitions opening in March.
Louis Carlos Bernal: Retrospectivita and the Art of Alvaro Encisco: Ghosts from the Desert Mr. Bernal is an artist living and working out of Tucson, Arizona. One of Bernal’s famous photographs was taken here in the Buffalo Bar! The Light Art Space Gallery has ben open since September of 2018. The opening celebration will be Friday, March 7, from 5-7 p. m. ArtistAlvaro Encisco will be be present to talk on his work starting at 5:30 ;p. Show runs until Saturday March 29. Gallery hours are Thursday 11-4, Friday 11-5, Saturday 11-5 , Sunday 11-3 and by appointments. Call 575-574- 8444.
Our regular LULAC Council 8003 meeting will have to be cancelled until Tuesday, March 18. I will travel to Washington DC for a National Board meeting on that on the regular meeting date. Council elections will be held on that meeting in March for all elected offices and appointments to other positions in the Council. Care to run for an office! Declare you candidacy for President, Vice President, Secretary-treasurer. Perhaps an appointed position as Chaplain, parliamentarian or building manager. Be prepared for a speech or two ! We need some fresh blood in all positions! A huge thanks to those who have stepped up in the past to help the Council continue to flourish!
I have spent several hours doing some plumbing at the Hall. Seems like our drain from the kitchen on our was plugged! This was starting to become a problem several weeks ago. I decided to tackle the project. I believe I got it working again! It cost the Council approximately $30 instead of the couple of hundred dollars from a plumber! I am totally amateur!
Our Hispanic Author selection committee has been named: Mikki Jemin, Renee Provencio and Javi Marrufo. Hopefully the committee can come up with an outstanding Southwest Hispanic Author by sometime in June. I know they are diligently doing research and probably some reading! Thanks Dr. Fox and Ted Pressler and others for your work on the Southwest Word Fiesta!
Renee is setting up a meeting on March 5 to plan the Enchilada Dinner scheduled for sometime in May. You can contact her if you wish to be directly involved in the committee for time and place. Unfortunately, I will be in Phoenix for a doctor’s appointment. We will keep you updated as to developments. I am sure Renee could use any donations of funds, eggs, corn tortillas, chile makers, help delivering, making the enchiladas, etc. The fundraising is for the Bayard Library and LULAC Council 8003. I hope we can count on our Council members to contribute our share of whatever is needed!
Bea, please let our guest know that we move our date up to March 18th for our regular meeting! Thanks!
State Convention venue has changed to Casino in Espanola! Cost and expenses drove it our of Santa Fe. It is scheduled for Augusta 15, 16, and 17. This could all change, but I just wanted to keep up updated. Much more to come on the Update! This is just to give you an idea of what has and will be happening soon!
Next Council meeting 5:30 p. m. on Tuesday, March 18 at the Polo Sierra LULAC Hall! Hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Fred Baca, President

November 17, 2024
Hope we find everyone doing well! Prayers to those having difficult medical issues.
A big “Thanks” to the LULAC Council 8003 members that were able to come out and help at the Tamal Fiesta booth that the Council set up.
Special thanks to Fermin Lopez Sr., Fred Marquez, Renee Provencio, Fred Baca, Jessica Salaiz, Mikki Jemin and Javi Marrufo and of course the ever present Bea McKinney working the circuit. Hope to see pictures from Bea and Javi on our website very soon!
Our booth make $197 from the sales of 50/50 raffle tickets, LULAC t-shirts and another donation of Sethycreation T-shirts donated by Francis, Brianna, Seth and Ben Fishcher. We received $21 from dues and another $21 from a new member.
There were several inquiries as to what LULAC was about and what it stood for. We also sold a few of the donated tumblers and old convention tumbers.
I felt we got super support from those attending, especially the many friends of our Council! We even go monetary donationsfrom some of the people coming to our booth.
Our own Fermin Lopez St. won the 50/50 raffle and took home $142!Although it was rather cool with cool breezes staring up in the afternoon and after a few minor glitches with our tent. Everything considered, it went well.
The Fiesta brought in quite a few people ready to eat great food, great entertainment and enjoy the company of friends and acquaintances. The Fiesta seems to be getting larger each year. Special thanks to Raul Turrieta wfho commandeered the event and along with a great committee made the Fiesta a super success.
If you didn’t get a chance to go, you missed a great time!
It was great seeing our friends and supporters. It had a fun atmosphere with plenty of things to do and get involved in. It was very well planned!. My thanks to the Santa Clara committee that worked on this for a few months and got it done!
Our next meeting is on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
We thank Jim Charleston from the Silver City Theater group who made a great presentation. He make a plea for our Council to look into the possibility for getting more involved and getting the youth interested in theater production.
We had a serious discussion on fundraising. It appears that the Enchilada Dinners may be on its last leg. Our stalwart members and volunteers who usually ramrod the Enchilada Dinners are dealing with medical issues. Its very difficult to continue the dinners without the volunteers that it takes to do Enchiladas.
We as a Council need to look at Fundraising projects to keep on going. We seriously need your input, but much more than that, is your help.
Suggestion brought forth were: A food raffle, looking into a “Round up” opportunity with the Silver City Food Co-op. Please send suggestions on fundraisers. We could also use members to step up and Chair the suggested fundraisers
Sincerely,
Fred Baca, President
LULAC Council 8003.
September 17,2024
Hope I find everyone doing well!
Our meeting on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 was well attended! Thank you for all that were able to attend.
We were unable to have a formal meeting as our Treasurer-Secretary was ill and could not attend. Our vice president was also absent. We did not have a quorum to conduct any business or take any votes. We did have an informal discussion on a few topics, but of course no action was taken.
Starting out was a superb presentation by Marivel on the LULAC Council Website. The Website is going to be great!
Its taken a lot of time, work and effort from Marivel and Javi not to forget Mariam McDonad who has guided both Marivel and Javi. It has color, history, pictures, applications, contact information, a calendar system for events occurring or will occur. There is much more and its coming out soon after some tweaking and fixing a few bugs.
We thoroughly enjoyed a presentation from Holley Nonen and Joseph Kennedy from the Crooked Forest Institute. Their presentation centered on the need for housing nationally as well as locally. They presented a very sequential method of getting the information out to the public on how housing can be made more affordable and attainable. It also spoke on the sizes of houses as well as better and more environmentally friendly materials can be used.
We had some very good questions from our members. I invited them to come back and give us any update. There was quite a bit of information to take in. We did cut the presentation down some, as many members wanted to attend the National Presidential Debates starting at 7:00 pm. We were our of the building early as to allow members to attend the Debate which was televised.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 22, 2024. The meeting will start promptly at 5:30 pm with a presentation Mr. Norm Wheeler who will speak on his platform as he is running for our District Attorney position in this coming election.
Presentation will be approximately 15-20 minutes.
Mr. Renteria, who is the present District Attorney in office has said he will come and discuss his platform as he is running again for the position. He has agreed to make his presentation at 7:00 pm. Mr. Renteria will be given the same amount of time. Both were invited. As you know, we are a nonpartisan organization and will not endorse any candidate in any office as an organization.
Members attending the last meeting: Fred Baca, Manuela Baca Jenkins, Lisa Vasquez, Della Acosta, Mikki Jemin, Marivel Medel, Javi Marrufo, Ted Pressler, our guests, Holley N. and Joseph Kennedy, our newest member Fermin Lopez, Sr., Bea McKinney, Renee Provencio and Lynn Baca. I am positive I forgot someone.
Hope to see you on October 22, 2024 at 5:30 pm.
Sincerely,
Fred Baca, President
