    Thursday, August 13, 2026

Greetings to all!  Prayers to all who are ill or just not feeling up to par!! We had a wonderful turnout at our Tuesday, Augusta 11, 2026, meeting!

A big thanks to all that were able to make it!   I felt much was accomplished!

Our next regular meeting date is on: September 15, 2026.

PLEASE NOTE THAT OUR MEETING DATE HAS CHANGED FROM THE SECOND TUESDAY TO THE THIRD TUESDAY OF THE MONTH.

We voted to change it to the third Tuesday of the month.  Reason being that many members who want to attend the town council meetings could not because our  meetings are on the same week as the town counci meeting. the town council meetings are on tuesdays on the second and fourth weeks.

The Council would like to appoint a volunteer from our Council to inform us as to what the Town Council meetings are all about.  This volunteer would attend the Town meetings and keep us informed to any happenings of interest to our Council.  This volunteer appointee does not need to speak to the Town Council.

All we want is to keep informed as to happenings in our community.  Interested?  Contact me for further information. You would not speak for the Council on any issues unless the Council would like for you to bring up something of  importance the Council would approve.

Our next potluck is on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.   We are inviting our esteemed education leaders in Silver Consolidated Schools Superintendent William Hawkins, our new Cobre Consolidated School System Superintendent in Verenice Gutierrez and Dr. Jose Coll, President of Western New Mexico University.

Glad to see Oly Perez back from her long stay in Albuquerque where Chase donated a kidney to a gentleman in great need.  You are our hero Chase for what you have done!  Not many would do something of what you have done!  I don’t have the words to describe what you have generously done.

We had a speaker in Colleen Walker from the Community Partnership for Kids.  She gave a wonderful presentation on what great thing the organization does for our kids throughout the County.  We wish them great success on all the projects they do for the kids!

Simon Sotelo was unable to attend the meeting on Tuesday as he had something pressing that came up.  He was going to present information on the film titled, “First We Bombed New Mexico”.  He has been hard at work in trying to bring this film to Grant County.  The film pertains to the fallout from the above ground testing the US government did on the Trinity site here in New Mexico.  Primarily, Latino communities ere not informed about the possible risks and ramifications of the above ground testing.  Many illnesses over multiple generations came about.

The cost to bring the film is about $3000.  Simon is requesting what our Council might be able help with. For more details and information please contact Simon.

I also received an email from Adrian Angulo to inform the Council on a Film Festival on Augusta 22 from 4-7 pm. in Silver City at the Seeboat Collective.

The event will feature our Congressman Gabe Vasquez and focuses on the folks doing important work across the region and country to protect our public lands and waters.

Join Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project is hosting the Gila Wild and Scenic Film Festival at the Seedboat Collective in Silver City.  The Gila River is a a critical moment as Senator Martin Heinrich and Representative Gabe Vasquez have championed M. H. Dutch Salmon Greater Gila Wild and Scenic River Act.  Designating these rivers as Wild and Scenic would provide permanent  protection for more than 400 miles of streams and rivers in the Gila region, safeguarding them for future generations.

There will be a Q and A session with legislative champions who share what is next for the Gila and how you can help.

food and drink will be available as well as meeting some great people!   Tickets will be on sale for $10.    A digital pass for those who cannot attend in person, which will allow the purchaser one week access to films from August 22nd to midnight August 28.

Hope to do another UPDATE soon as time permits!

    Sincerely,

    Fred Baca, President

    LULAC Council 8003
